Nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix

August 24, 2026 · Uncategorized

Every operations team I have worked with has a folklore of temporary fixes. The script somebody wrote one night in 2019. The service that gets restarted every Monday. The field nobody fills in because it breaks the integration.

Individually each was a reasonable decision under pressure. Collectively they become the actual architecture, and nobody has ever written it down.

Problem management is not root cause theatre

Where problem management fails, it usually fails because it has become a meeting that identifies an owner rather than a practice that identifies a cause. The distinction shows up in the record: a healthy known error database describes the fault, the workaround, and the conditions under which the workaround stops working. An unhealthy one lists incidents and the names of people who were asked to look into them.

Write the workaround down anyway

If a permanent fix is genuinely not affordable this year — and sometimes it is not — the honest move is to record the workaround properly, price the permanent fix, and put it in front of somebody with a budget. A documented temporary fix is a decision. An undocumented one is a liability waiting for the person who knew about it to resign.
